The Four-Star Cleaner – One Lemon Tackles the Microwave, Sink, Disposal, and Dishwasher

A lemon is my new bestie when it comes to deep cleaning the kitchen. One magical lemon, along with some water and a glass measuring cup, will deep clean your microwave, sink, disposal, and dishwasher. Here’s how to make your kitchen lemony fresh.

Microwave

Start with the microwave. Cut a whole lemon in half and place both halves in a 2 cup glass measuring cup (or similar vessel). Fill the measuring cup with water. Place the measuring cup with the water and lemon in your microwave on high for approximately 3 minutes. Let stand in microwave for another 5 minutes. Remove the measuring cup and use a clean sponge (or, better yet, a Skoy Cloth) to wipe down all the surfaces.

Sink

Once the lemon itself has cooled, remove it from the measuring cup, reserving the water. Use the lemon as a sponge to scrub down your kitchen sink. Be sure to scrub the drains. Rinse with water, and it will sparkle.

Garbage Disposal

This is a no brainer, but (save the water and) put the remaining lemon down the garbage disposal and turn it on to rid your disposal of any lingering funky smells.

Dishwasher

Finally, take the left over water in the measuring cup and place it, right side up, directly in your dishwasher on the bottom rack (with or without a load of dishes in it). Turn it on and let the left-over water gradually overflow throughout the cycle.

That’s one tough lemon that amounts to a lot of elbow grease! Better yet, it is non-toxic and environmentally friendly.
